Canal is Closed for skating.
Status detail: Officially Closed
The National Capital Commission regrets to advise the public that the Rideau Canal Skateway is officially closed for the season. The sustained mild weather of the past week has weakened the ice to the point that it is unrealistic to expect the ice to rebuild and to resume the skating season.
Since cold winter temperatures usually last until early March, the NCC held off announcing the official closure of the Skateway with the hopes of reopening a section or its entire length. Unfortunately, the weather forecast will not allow ice for safe skating conditions.
The 42nd skating season on the world’s largest skating rink started on January 15, 2012. Over that period, hundreds of thousands of people enjoyed 28 skating days, including a stretch of 19 consecutive days that overlapped with the first two weekends of Winterlude.
Status is from: Fri, Feb 24, 2012, 11:15am.

As the 2012 canal skating season is closed, we like to thank Daniel Feeny and Jean Wolfe of the NCC for collaborating on this project. See you on the canal next year.
